To retire under FERS, you must meet specific age and service requirements, which vary depending on the type of retirement you choose.

For example, under a regular Immediate FERS Retirement, you may qualify if:

You’ve reached your Minimum Retirement Age (MRA) with 30 years of service

You’re age 60 with 20 years of service

Or age 62 with at least 5 years of service

But if you retire before meeting full eligibility—for example, under the MRA + 10 provision—you could face a 5% penalty for every year you retire before age 62. That reduction is permanent and can significantly impact your retirement income for life.
